Chapter 1302:

Clip-clop, clip-clop…

The sharp sound of hooves reached my ears.

I looked up to see a troop of Wizard Clan soldiers, armored and marching along the mountain trail.

“Help me! Please, save me!” I summoned the last of my strength to call out, my voice hoarse and faint.

Several soldiers glanced my way, but their faces twisted with revulsion.

“Get lost!” the lead soldier barked, raising his whip. “What’s a crazy woman doing here?”

I staggered forward, collapsing before their horses. Another soldier pressed the tip of his spear against my shoulder.

“Come any closer, and you’ll regret it!”

Jett’s POV:

For the last few days, I had accompanied the King of the Wizard Clan, my father, on the royal hunt at the outskirts.

At present, he was eagerly discussing how to divide the spoils with his ministers. The hunting call echoed through the forest, but my mind was elsewhere. The issue of Makenna’s safety consumed me so much that I didn’t even bother to draw my bowstring.

“You haven’t made a single shot today, Your Highness,” Lucian said, riding up beside me. “Prince Colt has had his eyes on you this whole time.”

I fiddled with my reins absentmindedly before asking, “Is there any news about Makenna?”

Lucian’s expression darkened slightly. “The men we sent out haven’t returned yet. Your distraction will only serve to arouse the suspicion of both Prince Colt and your father.”

I scoffed audibly at this, then spun my horse around. “I need to clear my head. Don’t follow me.”

“Your Highness!” Lucian called out, trying to stop me. Probably afraid that Colt might take advantage of the hunt and try to harm me, he turned to a few personal guards and ordered them to follow me and protect me with their lives. The soldiers all signaled their understanding of his command and promptly followed as I rode deeper into the woods.

The horses’ hooves crunched softly on the damp, decaying leaves. I let my horse wander aimlessly, having no interest in the hunt.

“It’s getting late, Your Highness. We should head back,” one of the guards said to me.

I ignored him, lost in my own thoughts.

“Help me! Please, save me!” A sudden, desperate cry shattered the forest’s silence.

I hurriedly reined my horse to an abrupt stop. In the distance, a disheveled woman stumbled toward us. Her hair was matted with dead leaves, and her ankles were bare and bloodied.

She seemed utterly helpless.

Behind her, a burly man with a menacing look on his face gave chase.

Before I could give an order, my guards quickly stepped in front of me, lowering their spears to block the woman from coming any closer.
