Chapter 1298:

Swoosh!

The rough fabric of my blouse tore with a sickening rip, sending a shiver down my neck.

“Let me go!” I fought back with all my strength, digging my nails into his face and leaving bloody marks, but he didn’t flinch. Instead, he forced me down onto the ground. A crushing wave of hopelessness swept over me, and tears streamed down my cheeks.

His strength was overwhelming. I couldn’t break free.

“You beast!” a rough voice suddenly cut through the silence.

Before Brice could react, a wooden stick came crashing down on his back with a heavy thud.

“Ouch!” he roared, stumbling forward and releasing me.

I scrambled back and saw Kaya standing on the steps, gripping the wooden stick tightly with both hands.

“You old hag! How dare you spoil my fun!” Brice spat, clutching his back as the alcohol’s haze began to wear off.

Kaya raised the stick again, her eyes blazing with fury. “Get out! Or I swear I’ll use every last breath to beat you to death, bastard!”

But Brice wasn’t intimidated. He shoved Kaya roughly aside.

I froze, horrified, as she slammed against the grindstone, her lower back striking its sharp edge with a sickening thud.

“Run, child! Run!” Kaya’s rough voice pierced the air.

She threw her arms around Brice’s legs, refusing to let go no matter how violently he kicked and struggled.

“You old witch!” Brice bellowed, raining blows down on her back, each strike drawing blood from her lips.

My legs felt like stone, rooted to the ground as I stared in numb horror. Through strands of messy hair, Kaya’s eyes found mine. “Run!”

Her desperate scream snapped me out of my daze.

I spun and bolted, Kaya’s agonized cries and Brice’s furious curses echoing behind me.

Tears blurred my vision as I stumbled out of the yard.

“Stop, you wretch!” Brice’s angry shouts grew closer, louder.

I sprinted with every ounce of strength left in me, my voice breaking as I screamed into the empty air. “Help! Somebody help!”

Villagers peeked nervously from their doorways, but none dared to stand up to the crazed Brice.

With no other choice, I bolted toward the next village.

I lost track of how far I had run before my legs finally gave out, and I collapsed beside a brook. It was then I realized my shoes were gone.

Beneath the frayed hem of my skirt, my feet were raw and bleeding, cut open by the jagged stones scattered along the path. The cold water of the stream washed over my wounds, the sharp sting jolting me back to focus.

In the distance, a haunting wolf’s howl echoed through the air, sending a shiver racing down my spine.
