Chapter 1297
Chapter 1297:
Brice’s rough hand clamped onto my wrist, his grip bruising. “Come with me, girl. I’ll give you everything you could want…”
“Let go!” I fought with all my strength, but his hold tightened, yanking me off balance.
“Stop it!” Kaya, summoning strength from somewhere deep, seized a water glass from the bedside table and flung it at him.
The glass shattered at Brice’s feet, fragments scattering across the floor.
A nurse burst in at the noise and stepped between us. “Brice Green! Stirring up trouble in the clinic again?” she snapped. “Leave now, or I’m calling the authorities!”
Brice’s face darkened, and he finally released my wrist.
Before stalking off, he shot me a venomous glare. “You little wretch, you’ll regret this!”
Only when his footsteps faded did I realize my legs were shaking uncontrollably.
Kaya pulled me close, gently rubbing my reddened wrist. “That man’s the village bully. If you see him again, steer clear…”
Still rattled, I nodded silently.
The nurse checked Kaya’s condition and handed me a few packets of medicine. “Her fever’s mostly gone. She can rest at home now.”
Makenna’s POV:
I brought Kaya back to her place.
All day long, I stayed close to her bed, giving her medicine on schedule, cleaning her up, and changing the cold pack on her forehead.
When night came, her breathing eased, and the burning heat on her forehead faded away.

Early the next morning, while Kaya was still fast asleep, I slipped into the kitchen to prepare a wholesome meal for her. The stove crackled softly as the chicken broth bubbled quietly in the pot.
“Just one more hour, and it will be perfect for Kaya.”
By midday, I scooped the simmered broth into a bowl and set it beside a plate of vegetables and a bowl of soft, fragrant cereal. The food steamed invitingly on the tray. I took a steady breath and carefully lifted it.
Crack!
As I crossed the kitchen doorway, a sharp sound came from the wall near the courtyard. My heart skipped a beat. I turned and spotted Brice, the village’s troublemaker, hauling himself over the fence into the yard.
His face was flushed red, his cloudy eyes fixed on me with a hungry glare, and his lips twisted into a vile grin.
“Hey there, pretty thing…” he slurred, reeking of alcohol as he lurched toward me. “I’ve missed you so much…”
Clang!
Blood ran cold in my veins as the tray slipped from my hands and crashed onto the ground.
“Stay away from me!” I yelled, snatching the broom leaning against the wall and swinging it at him.
He caught my wrist in one swift move. “Feisty, aren’t you…” His greasy hand tightened around my wrist while the other clawed at my collar. “I kind of like that.”
