Chapter 1299
Chapter 1299:
Trembling, I snatched up a dry stick from the ground, gripping it tightly as if it could shield me.
Then, without warning, a warm hand clamped over my mouth from behind.
Dominic’s POV:
“Makenna!” I shouted as I shot up in bed, drenched in sweat that chilled me to the bone.
The dream still burned in my mind like a film stuck on pause. I had seen Makenna struggling in the mud, trapped beneath a dark, faceless figure. Her arm reached out toward me, desperate, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t move. My legs felt glued to the ground, as if cement held me in place.
My heart pounded against my ribs as I clutched the fabric of my shirt in panic. The moonlight slipped through the curtains, scattering flickering shapes across the floor like restless ghosts.
Slowly, I reached up and touched the werewolf gland behind my neck. It gave off a faint warmth, barely noticeable.
“She’s still alive…” I whispered, my throat raw, the sound hardly my own. “We swore an oath to the Moon Goddess to be mates. If she were truly gone… I wouldn’t still be breathing.”
Swinging my legs over the edge of the bed, I rose. It was as though some invisible string pulled me forward, guiding me toward Makenna’s room.
Ever since her fall from the cliff, her room had been dusted and aired out every day, yet it always felt hollow, as if something vital had been stripped away. But tonight, a soft golden glow seeped through the narrow gap beneath the door.
At this hour, no servant would be inside tidying up.
“Makenna?” My voice quivered as I rushed forward, my heart hammering. “Is it… could Makenna really be back?”
The moment my fingers brushed the doorknob, a faint noise drifted from within. Adrenaline surged through me. I shoved the door open. “Makenna, is that you?”

But it wasn’t her. Clayton stood rigid in front of the vanity. At the sound of the door creaking open, he spun around. For an instant, his face lit up with surprise. Then, as soon as he recognized me, the spark faded like a flame snuffed out.
I stopped in my tracks. “What are you doing in Makenna’s room this late?” My voice sounded brittle, as if it might crack.
Clayton gave a lopsided smile and shrugged. “Could ask you the same. Why are you here?”
I didn’t bother replying. I simply stepped into the room.
“I dreamed of her,” Clayton said suddenly, his voice so soft it barely stirred the air, like a whisper carried on the breeze. “In the dream, someone was picking on her… hurting her.”
“I dreamed of her too…” I sank onto the sofa by the window, my fingers brushing against a faint indentation. This had always been Makenna’s favorite spot.
The room looked untouched, as if time itself had frozen the moment she disappeared. It felt like she could walk in at any second.
I drew in a slow breath. Her scent still lingered, faint but unmistakable—cool and comforting.
Clayton and I locked eyes briefly. Neither of us spoke. Maybe we were both caught in our own thoughts, clinging to the fragments of her we couldn’t let go of.
