Chapter 1296:

“Kaya!” I rushed to her bedside, gripping her burning-hot hand in mine. “What’s wrong?”

Her eyes remained closed, utterly unresponsive to my anxious calls.

My trembling fingers brushed against her forehead; the scorching heat startled me. Beneath the blankets, her frail body trembled on occasion, faint, painful groans escaping her lips.

Makenna’s POV:

Kaya’s feverish warmth radiated through her thin clothing as I clenched my jaw, hoisting her frail body onto my back.

Her shallow, heated breaths grazed the nape of my neck.

“Kaya, hold on…” I whispered, my voice trembling as I shoved open the gate.

“What’s happening here?”

A rough male voice cut through the air.

Squinting, I saw a stocky neighbor with a hoe slung over his shoulder standing by the roadside, his stubbled face marked with surprise.

“Sir, please, we need help!” I pleaded, desperation spilling out. “Kaya’s burning up and fainted! I don’t know where the clinic is—can you guide me?”

The man’s eyes lingered on my face. For a brief moment, a strange glint in his gaze sent a shiver of discomfort through me.

Without a word, he crossed the distance in a few quick strides, his calloused hands lifting Kaya from my back without asking. “Follow me. The clinic’s close.”

At that moment, Kaya’s safety was all that mattered, so I had no choice but to trust him.

As we hurried along, his steps were quick, but he kept glancing back at me. His unsettling stare made my skin crawl.

Soon, we reached a small clinic in Cloverdale.

Kaya remained unconscious. The village doctor administered an injection and handed me a few packets of medicine.

The man stood nearby the entire time, his eyes fixed on me.

“Thank you for your help, sir,” I said tightly, avoiding his gaze. “You… you can go now. Once Kaya’s better, we’ll visit you to thank you properly.”

Instead of leaving, he stepped closer. “Miss, are you related to Kaya? I don’t recall seeing you around here.”

“My dear…” Kaya’s faint voice interrupted from the hospital bed.

I turned to see her pale face, her eyes wide with fear. “Come here, quick…”

As Kaya stirred, the man’s gaze shifted from me to her. He smirked in a way that turned my stomach and said, “Kaya, who’s this girl to you? She seems real worried about you.”

“Brice Green!” Kaya’s sudden shout startled me. She struggled to sit up, her face flushed with anger. “Get out! Leave this instant!”

As she yelled, Kaya grabbed my hand, pulling me close to her side protectively. But the man, Brice, didn’t budge. Instead, he leered and leaned closer to me. “Kaya, that’s no way to speak to me.”

His predatory eyes raked over me. “I brought you here, didn’t I? How about this—let the girl spend a night with me as thanks?”

His words sent ice through my veins. I stepped back, only to hit the cold, hard wall behind me.
