Chapter 1253:

The mouthwatering smell of the food spread through the room.

Alden’s eyes lit up, and he tried to sit up with enthusiasm.

“Easy with your injury,” I warned, quickly catching his arm and helping him slowly make his way to the small dining table.

He grabbed a spoon and took a big bite of the broth. His eyes widened in surprise as he tasted it.

“This is incredible!” he said, and then quickly grabbed a fork to pick up the greens. “Your cooking is unbeatable, Makenna. It’s something else!”

My cheeks flushed, and I stammered, “Well… actually, the Pierce family’s chef made this…”

The mood in the room shifted, growing tense. The lightheartedness faded, leaving only the soft rustling of leaves outside the window.

Alden’s hand, holding the fork, froze in mid-air. His eyes widened just a bit, though the big grin still stayed on his face.

“And…” I cleared my throat, forcing a smile to steer the conversation. “I’m heading to the werewolf mountains tomorrow. You need to take care of yourself while I’m gone…”

With a sharp clink, the fork slipped from Alden’s hand, landing on the porcelain plate.

His face changed in an instant, his brows knitting together. Shock filled his eyes. “The werewolf mountains? That place is swarming with Leonardo’s soldiers right now. It’s way too risky! Makenna, you can’t go!”

I reached out, ruffling his soft hair, hoping to calm him down. “Don’t worry. I’ll be fine. I’ll come back safe.”

“NO!” he said, his voice firm, suddenly grabbing my wrist. His grip was so tight it almost hurt. “Wait until I’m better. I’ll go with you!” Seeing him like that, my heart ached.

His chest was still bandaged, with faint bloodstains visible. He had already endured so much to get the ancient texts. How could I let him put himself in danger again?

“Alden…” I sighed, trying to pull my hand away, but his grip only tightened.

“Makenna…” His voice was soft, almost desperate. “Please, wait until I’ve recovered.”

“No!” I snapped, standing up so quickly that the chair screeched loudly. I put on a serious face, my brows knitting together. “Do you think I’m asking for your approval? It’s already been settled!”

Makenna’s POV:

Alden’s lashes fluttered softly, like fragile butterfly wings dampened by rain. He pressed his pale lips together, then nodded slowly. “Okay, I’ll wait for you to return.”

His voice was barely a whisper, yet it pulled at my heartstrings.

I stayed by his side in the hospital room for a few hours, until darkness completely took over the sky outside the window.

Just before I left, Alden insisted on walking me to the door. Unable to say no, I helped him shuffle into the hallway.

“Get some rest and stay warm, alright?” I gave his shoulder a gentle push. He seemed like he wanted to say more, but in the end, all he did was murmur a soft “Okay.”

As I walked away, I could sense his eyes on me, pulling at my heart like an unseen thread.
