Chapter 1251:

Clayton put his cup down too, his face tight with worry. “Makenna, this is way too risky.”

Even Dominic held onto my hand, his eyes filled with concern. “Makenna, please think it over.”

“I’ve made up my mind!” I shot to my feet, pressing my palms on the table as I stared them all down. “You know how I am. Once I’ve made a choice, there’s no changing it.”

Bryan opened his mouth to argue further, but when he saw the determination in my eyes, he let out a heavy sigh.

He ran his fingers through his hair, frustrated, and finally gave in with a reluctant nod. “Do what you want.” The tension at lunch slowly began to lift.

Clayton drummed his fingers on the table, thinking hard. “To get into the werewolf mountains without being caught by the royal soldiers, our best bet is to disguise ourselves and sneak in.”

“That’s a fantastic idea!” My eyes sparkled with excitement.

Bryan jumped in, dipping his finger into the red wine and drawing a map on the tablecloth. “There’s a trail on the east side of the werewolf mountains. The security there isn’t as tight.”

After a lengthy and intense discussion, the plan was finally decided. Dominic and I were to take on secret identities and infiltrate the mountains. Bryan and Amon would lead the front line, keeping an eye on the border, while Clayton would ensure Marehelm’s defenses held strong against any royal attacks. Clayton handed me a bowl of soup, his voice soft but filled with concern. “Makenna, be careful during your mission.”

I accepted the bowl, giving them a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry, we’ll come back safely with the sacred artifact.”

Later in the day, I went to see Winfred in his room.

I quietly pushed the door open and spotted Alice by the cradle, playing with Winfred and holding a small toy.

At the sound, Alice turned, saw it was me, and called out in a soft voice, “Makenna, come and see, Winfred just woke up.”

I tiptoed over and bent down to get a closer look at the baby in the cradle. Winfred had grown a lot recently. His chubby face was rosy, and his big eyes shone brightly. When he noticed me, he broke into a wide, toothless grin.

His tiny hands waved around as though he was trying to grab something. “He’s been eating well and sleeping soundly, growing so quickly,” Alice said, gently adjusting Winfred’s tiny clothes, tapping his nose lightly with her fingers. I sat beside the cradle, feeling Winfred’s small hand wrap around my fingers.

“Alice,” I said quietly, “in a few days, Dominic and I are heading to the werewolf mountains.”

Alice paused, her eyes showing a flicker of concern.

But she quickly gathered herself, offering a soft smile. “I know I can’t stop you.”

She took my other hand in hers, saying, “Just promise me you’ll be careful.”

“Alright,” I nodded. “While I’m gone, I’ll leave Winfred in your care.”

“Of course!” Alice giggled, giving my cheek a playful pinch. “I’m his godmother, after all!”

We shared a smile and went on playing with little Winfred.
