Chapter 1224:

I clenched my teeth, wanting to argue, to keep fighting, but the blinding pain in my shoulder left me speechless. I had no choice but to hold on to Bryan as he carried me, one slow step at a time, away from the madness.

Once we got back to the Pierce family estate, a doctor was called right away to treat my injury. I couldn’t help but gasp sharply as the sting of the antiseptic hit the fresh wound, cold sweat trickling down my face. The doctor worked carefully to pull the arrow out. Blood quickly started to flow, soaking the clean bandages he wrapped around the wound.

“How’s the battle going?” I managed to croak, my voice barely a whisper, filled with worry.

Bryan stepped closer, taking my hand in his, squeezing it gently for reassurance. “Makenna, you have to rest now. No more taking chances. Not like this.”

I shook my head, struggling against the pain. “Marehelm can’t fall. We can’t let them win. I can’t just lie here and quit.”

“I get it, I truly do. But right now, you need to rest. We’ll hold Marehelm. Please, trust me,” Bryan said, his voice softening as he tried to calm me down.

But outside these walls, there was no peace—only the harsh truth.

Suddenly, the door crashed open, and a soldier staggered in, his face drained of color, panic burning in his eyes.

“Terrible news! The king’s army has breached Marehelm’s outer defenses! The citizens are running for their lives! Marehelm is about to fall!”

Makenna’s POV:

When I heard the news, I tried to sit up, but the sharp pain from my shoulder wound made me gasp. Bryan quickly moved to my side, pressing me gently but firmly back onto the bed. His face was serious as he told me, “You need to rest now!”

I gazed at him, feeling both anxious and conflicted. I knew he was just looking out for me, but my mind kept going back to what was happening in Marehelm. It made it impossible to relax.

I clenched my teeth and looked at him with pleading eyes. “Bryan, please, let me know if anything changes, okay?”

Hearing that, the hardness in Bryan’s eyes eased a little. He gave a small nod, his gaze softening as he assured me, “I promise. Rest easy. Leave everything to me.”

Reluctantly, I lay back down, though unease still gnawed at me. I shut my eyes, desperately trying to calm myself, but images of the city’s turmoil and Leonardo’s army closing in kept racing through my mind.

Fatigue and worry finally pushed me into a restless sleep.

Once again, I dreamed. In my dream, I saw my mother once more. She appeared surrounded by a soft, almost otherworldly glow, her face gentle and filled with kindness. I hurried into her embrace, tears streaming down my face as I struggled to speak.

“Mother, I’m so tired, so scared… I don’t know what to do,” I whispered, my voice trembling.

She tenderly brushed my hair, her warm voice offering comfort. “Makenna, don’t be afraid,” she said softly.

I clung to her tightly, as if she were my only safe place. Once my tears subsided, she quietly told me, “Makenna, the werewolves have an ancient sacred artifact that only the Saint of White Wolves can wield. Find it, and it will hold the secret to reversing what has happened.”

I lifted my gaze, hope shining brightly in my eyes. “A sacred artifact? Where can I find it?” I asked eagerly.
