Chapter 1202:

I rose slowly, stole one last look at her, and forced myself back to the gate tower to lead the troops.

The fight ended not long after. We crushed the enemy and claimed a resounding victory. The enemy had taken a brutal hit—many were dead, and the rest ended up in chains.

The city streets were strewn with corpses, and the overpowering stench of blood hung heavy in the air, turning stomachs.

Still, something gnawed at me. I couldn’t sit still. Without a second thought, I descended from the gate tower and sprinted toward Paula’s last spot.

When I reached her, she was lying there, limp and motionless, her face drained of color.

I dropped to my knees, scooped her up, and clutched her close. “Paula, please, stay with me. The doctor’s coming, just hang on…”

My voice must have reached her somehow. Her eyelids fluttered open, just barely.

Her hand trembled slightly, and she whispered, her words so soft they almost slipped away, “Makenna… I’m sorry… I don’t think I can stay much longer…”

Tears poured down my cheeks, and I was so shaken I could barely string a sentence together. “Don’t say that. You’ll be okay. Paula, I won’t let you go.”

Her eyes softened with peace, and she managed a small, contented smile. “Makenna… I’m happy to die for you…” Her voice faded, barely more than a breath now.

“Paula, don’t talk… just rest… please,” I begged through sobs, panic rising.

As her words disappeared, her hand slipped from mine, her eyelids fell shut, and her chest stopped moving.

I stayed frozen, stunned. It felt like something had ripped a hole through my chest.

“Paula… Paula! Please, wake up! Don’t leave me…”

I clung to her, wailing from the depths of my soul. But no matter how desperately I cried out, her eyes remained closed forever.

A sharp wind whipped past, cutting into my skin and driving the sorrow deeper. I sank to the ground, still cradling her body, and broke into helpless sobs.

Makenna’s POV:

Paula’s funeral took place on a bright, cloudless morning.

The sky stretched out in a soft blue, the sun casting its light gently—as if the world itself felt the sorrow in the air.

I stood quietly at her side, eyes fixed on her still face, my chest aching with sorrow and the wish that she wasn’t gone.

Her skin was drained of color, yet there was a strange calm about her, as though she were lost in peaceful slumber.

But deep down, I understood she would never stir again…

“Paula…” I murmured, my voice catching in my throat.

She had been one of the few people I trusted completely, and her death left a raw wound inside me.

I reached out, my fingers trembling, and clasped her hand gently, hoping somehow it might bring her back to life.

But her hand stayed cold, stiff like stone, silent to my touch.
