Chapter 1201:

Amon stepped in, the seriousness in his tone cutting through the emotion. His eyes met mine with quiet resolve.

“Makenna, don’t worry. I’ll always protect Alice.”

I let go of her and aimed a mock warning at him, voice light but firm.

“Amon, you’re lucky to have her. If you mess this up, I won’t let you get away with it.”

He chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck, clearly a little sheepish.

All at once, battle cries erupted beyond the city walls, tearing through the calm and shattering the peaceful spell of the wedding. Every face hardened as we looked to one another, sharp and alert. The enemy had taken the bait.

Makenna’s POV:

The distant roar of battle cries grew louder as the enemy neared the city.

Bryan curled his lip in disgust and quickly gave orders to the soldiers near him. “Shut the gates! Trap them!” he barked.

The city gate mechanism was set into motion, and with a low rumble, the massive iron doors began to close.

The guards stationed on the battlements were already on edge, their weapons—bows and spears—pointed at the approaching enemy. We had been preparing for this moment, setting a trap within the city, waiting for the enemy to walk right into it.

Elite soldiers were hidden in the buildings lining the streets, holding their breath, waiting for my signal. The battle was on the verge of exploding.

At a single word, our troops burst forth from every direction, surrounding the enemy like a tightening net.

Caught off guard, the enemy didn’t see it coming. Their formation shattered into disarray.

“Kill! Kill them all!” came the savage cry.

Their leader swung his long sword wildly, trying to rally his panicked soldiers.

But our assault was like a storm—fierce and unstoppable. They couldn’t hold their ground.

I stood on an elevated spot, watching it all unfold with a heart turned to ice.

Below, the streets rang with steel striking steel and the anguished screams of the wounded.

“Makenna, watch out!”

Out of nowhere, Paula’s voice pierced through the chaos, sharp in my ears.

Before I had time to react, an arrow was already speeding straight at me.

Thud! Paula, sharp as ever and faster than lightning, shoved me aside and took the hit instead.

“Paula!” I cried out, stunned, catching her before she collapsed.

Blood poured from her mouth as she coughed. Her skin turned ghostly pale, and sweat clung to her brow. Still, she managed a faint smile.

“Makenna, don’t worry about me. Go… lead the fight…”

A sharp pain twisted in my chest, so deep I could hardly breathe.

She’d taken the blow for me. Without her, I’d be the one bleeding now. I guided her to a safer spot, knelt at her side, and gripped her hand as if I’d never let go.

“Makenna… you… need to go…” she murmured, gently pulling her fingers free from mine.
