Chapter 1173
Chapter 1173:
“Water…”
I rasped, the word barely escaping before gentle hands lifted my shoulders, guiding a glass to my parched lips.
“Easy now, sip it slow,” a soft voice murmured, warm as a summer breeze against my ear.
I obeyed, letting the cool liquid soothe the raw ache in my throat, like rain on scorched earth.
Raising my gaze, I found Clayton’s steady eyes on me, tender yet shadowed with a flicker of worry.
“What… what happened to me?” I croaked, my voice a frail thread, as if wrung from the depths of my soul.
Clayton eased me back onto the pillows with care, settling beside me. “The doctor said you’ve been running on fumes, weighed down by stress. You collapsed, Makenna. You need to rest, to let your body catch its breath.”
My brow furrowed as a fleeting memory from before I collapsed flickered through my mind, sharp and elusive.
I clutched Clayton’s sleeve, my voice trembling. “Winfred… where is Winfred? Is he okay?”
Clayton’s hand covered mine, a gentle anchor. “Winfred is fine, sleeping soundly in the next room, tummy full of milk. Rest now, and you’ll see him soon.”
Knowing Winfred was safe, I let out a gentle sigh of relief, yet a lingering thread of unease still wove through my heart.
I struggled to rise, urgency sharpening my words. “I need to see him. I need to know he is safe.”
“Makenna, you’re running on empty. I’ve got our best people watching over Winfred—his safety’s ironclad. Trust me, he is in good hands.” Clayton let out a soft, resigned sigh, his hands tenderly guiding me back to the embrace of the pillows.

My body betrayed me, too weak to argue, and I sank back, defeated. Exhaustion had drained me dry, leaving me no choice but to surrender to the bed’s embrace.
Yet my heart churned, restless.
The thought of Jett pierced me like a shard of glass.
“Any word on Jett?” I whispered, my voice barely holding.
Clayton’s brow creased, his tone heavy with regret. “We’ve sent trackers, but they’ve come up empty. Jett has likely crossed into Wizard Clan territory. For now, he is a shadow we can’t pin down.”
Tears spilled silently, tracing paths down my cheeks. “It’s my fault,” I murmured, despair clawing at me. “If not for me, Jett wouldn’t have gone back…”
Clayton’s hand enveloped mine, warm and steady. “Don’t carry that weight. Jett chose this path to protect you and Winfred. He would hate to see you drowning in guilt.”
I gripped Clayton’s hand tightly, resolve hardening my voice. “We have to bring him back. I won’t let Jett face the Wizard Clan’s perils alone.”
Clayton’s eyes gleamed with determination. “I swear, we’ll move heaven and earth to save him.”
As our words wove through the air, a soft knock—light and tentative—tapped at the ward’s door.
