Chapter 1170:

A pang gripped my heart, and I hurried after him, seizing his hand. “Jett, please don’t go. If we hold on just a little longer, Bryan and the others will surely arrive.”

Jett gently freed his hand from my grasp, a wistful smile tugging at his lips. “Makenna, I have to return. I’ve realized I’m too weak—too powerless to shield you. I need to find a way, a strength, to ensure you’re never in such danger again.”

His words left me hollow, a wave of helplessness washing over me. I understood Jett’s resolve was rooted in his care for me, yet the thought of parting tore at my soul.

I clutched his sleeve, my voice raw and trembling. “Jett, I don’t need any grand protection. I just need you safe. Please, stay.”

But Jett’s gaze held firm, unshaken. He reached out, his hand tenderly brushing my hair, his voice soft and reassuring. “Makenna, don’t fear. I’ll return to you.”

With those final words, he turned, his steps resolute, and departed with Lucian into the shadows.

Makenna’s POV:

I just stood there, frozen and hopeless, watching the spot where Jett had disappeared until even his shadow was swallowed by the dark. The wind howled all around me, cutting through my jacket like a knife, but it still wasn’t nearly as brutal as the emptiness gnawing at my chest.

An overwhelming sense of defeat crashed down on me, making it feel like my whole life was falling apart right then and there.

I squeezed my hands into tight fists, my fingernails biting into my skin, but the sting barely even registered.

“Makenna, are you okay?” came Alice’s voice, thick with worry, from somewhere behind me.

I snapped out of it, hurriedly brushing the tears from my cheeks and plastering on a shaky smile as I faced her. “I’m fine. How about you? Are you holding up okay?”

Alice gave a curt nod, a faint, tired smile tugging at her colorless lips as she said softly, “I’m fine, don’t worry.”

The sight of her looking so drained hit me like a punch to the gut, stirring up a heavy mix of guilt and sorrow inside me.

I moved closer, reaching out to gently take her hand in mine, and managed to whisper through the lump in my throat, “Alice, you’ve suffered a lot all this time. If it weren’t for you looking after Winfred, I’m scared to think what might have happened…”

Alice cut me off, shaking her head gently before I could finish. “Makenna, don’t say that. Winfred is your son, so he’s family to me, too. I’d give my life for him in a heartbeat.”

Alice had always been there for me without question, shouldering every load, no matter how heavy. As she spoke, she gently placed Winfred in my arms and whispered, “Winfred’s such a good boy. Taking care of him is no trouble at all.”

My hands shook as I cradled Winfred, and all the emotions I’d been holding back rushed out in tears.

“Winfred… Winfred… I’m so sorry. It’s all my fault you had to go through so much…” I hugged him close, repeating his name over and over.

Alice stood next to me, her own eyes filling with tears, as she softly patted my back. “Makenna, please don’t cry. Winfred’s okay now, and we’re all here for you. Things will get better.”

I nodded, about to speak, when suddenly, I heard hurried footsteps and quiet voices coming from outside the gates.
