Chapter 1358:

But when I reached the city gates, I was met with a solid wall of soldiers forming three defensive lines.

“Damn it!” I cursed under my breath.

Lurking in the shadows near the gates, I scanned the chaos for any sign of Clayton or Makenna, but they were nowhere to be found.

“Hurry! Prince Colt’s orders—sweep the city for those werewolves!” A heavily armed unit stormed past me.

My eyes narrowed as they veered into a shadowed alley, something about it prickling at my instincts.

Moving like a phantom, I followed them, my steps silent.

The clank of chains reverberated from the alley’s depths. Pressing myself flat against the damp wall, I peered through a sliver of space and froze, my heart lurching.

Makenna’s wrists were shackled in iron, her face defiant but strained. And Clayton, worse off, lay limp, dragged like a broken doll by two soldiers.

“Clayton, you useless fool,” I growled, my fists clenching until my knuckles whitened. “Can’t even keep one person safe.”

Every fiber of me screamed to charge in, but I was no match for them alone.

My gaze drifted toward the palace.

Alden had returned to Marehelm for reinforcements, but who knew when he’d be back? As much as it burned my pride to admit, Jett was my only hope now. Slipping into the palace was smoother than I’d anticipated.

The guards, distracted by talk of the citywide lockdown, didn’t notice a werewolf ghosting past their ranks.

I reached Jett’s residence and perched on the gnarled plane tree outside his window, just in time to catch a heated exchange within.

“Your Highness, we’ve found no trace of Miss Dunn.”

“Keep looking! Turn the royal city upside down if you have to!”

With a swift kick, I shattered the window and vaulted inside.

“Call off the search. Colt’s got Makenna.”

Jett’s eyes flashed under the flickering lamplight, a storm of emotion swiftly buried beneath a cold, mocking smirk.

“Dominic, so you’re the one who took Makenna.”

“Took?” I scoffed, my voice dripping with scorn. “Makenna’s always been mine.”

My eyes swept the study, landing on a figure lurking in the corner. His gaze burned with hostility, his hand resting on his sword’s hilt, poised to strike. I knew him. Earlier, in that same alley, he’d been the one squaring off against Colt’s men.

Suspicion gnawed at me. It made no sense; he had to know Colt had taken Makenna. So why lie to Jett and say she was nowhere to be found?

“Jett,” I drawled, letting his name linger like a challenge, “if you want Makenna back, you might want to leash your own dogs. This one, he saw Colt take her with his own eyes and kept it from you.”

Jett turned, his gaze pinning the man with a ferocity that could have scorched the earth.

“Lucian, explain yourself.”

“Your Highness!” Lucian’s voice was steady as stone. “This man is the werewolf prince. Our focus should be—”
