Chapter 1311
Chapter 1311:
“Not to your liking?”
A familiar voice materialized from behind me, cutting through my melancholy like a blade through silk. I spun around to discover Jett approaching with purposeful strides, a delicate sheen of perspiration glistening on his brow—evidence of his hurried return.
He claimed the seat beside me with the fluid grace of someone who belonged there, then reached out to brush away a wayward crumb from the corner of my mouth with intimate familiarity.
My fingers found the hem of my dress and gripped it like a lifeline. “I need to visit Kaya in Cloverdale.”
Jett’s hand froze in its gentle motion. “Kaya?” The name seemed to catch in his throat.
“She’s the elderly woman who became my savior by the river,” I explained urgently. “The man who attempted to force himself upon me is Kaya’s neighbor. His name is Brice. Kaya courageously intervened. If she hadn’t defended me with such fierce determination…”
The haunting image of Kaya being violently shoved to the ground caused my voice to fracture with emotion. “She suffered injury and lost consciousness while shielding me from harm. I must ensure she’s recovered safely.”
Something indefinable flickered across Jett’s features—there and gone like lightning—before his composed mask settled back into place. He captured my hand in his with infinite gentleness. “Of course. We’ll depart immediately.”
With those words…
Hanging in the air between us, he pivoted toward the servants and issued swift instructions for them to ready the car for our journey.

The car rumbled along the muddy trail winding through Cloverdale’s rustic expanse.
Through the window, I glimpsed a cluster of quaint, thatched cottages nestled at the mountain’s base, their chimneys trailing delicate tendrils of smoke into the dawn’s golden glow.
“There,” I murmured, pointing toward the cottage nearest the rugged slope, its roof patchy and weathered by time.
Jett stepped out first, offering a gallant hand to help me from the car.
The cottage’s wooden door stood slightly ajar, groaning softly as I nudged it open.
“Kaya?” I called gently into the dim interior.
A sudden, wrenching cough echoed from within, sharp and unsettling. In the faint light filtering through the doorway, I spotted Kaya curled upon a modest bed in the corner, her silver hair tangled and unkempt. At the sight of me, her clouded eyes sparked with sudden clarity.
“You’ve come!” she gasped, struggling to rise, her frail wrist, marred by faint bruises, trembling with the effort. “Are you okay? That rogue Brice didn’t lay a hand on you, did he?”
I hurried to her side, steadying her fragile frame, alarmed by the feverish heat radiating from her skin.
“You’re burning up!” I exclaimed, my heart sinking as I noticed the crusted wound at her temple, its edges inflamed and raw.
Jett spun on his heel, calling sharply, “Doctor!”
