Chapter 1294:

I gave a small nod and wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth.

Kaya spoke softly. “I brewed this herbal remedy myself using dried plants. It’s bitter, but it might ease your coughing and stop the bleeding.”

I tilted my head back and swallowed it all in one swift motion. The sharp bitterness hit my tongue, making me wince in discomfort.

“Medicine that works often tastes bitter,” Kaya said with a gentle smile as she handed me a piece of candy. “Go outside and breathe some fresh air. Staying cooped up indoors isn’t good for you.”

The burning in my throat made me frown, but I managed a grateful smile. “Thank you,” I said softly.

“You’re very welcome, dear,” Kaya replied cheerfully. She took the empty bowl and began chatting about the mountain happenings of the day as she hunched her shoulders and moved toward the courtyard.

Sunlight pierced through the clouds, spilling light into the small yard. I followed Kaya to the herb-drying rack.

With steady hands, she carefully spread the dried herbs over a bamboo tray, their earthy scent filling the air around us.

“Kaya, you’re so quick with your hands,” I remarked, imitating her as I carefully spread the herbs one by one.

“After all these years, this is about the only thing I’ve mastered,” she said with a chuckle, stealing a glance at me. Then, lowering her voice, she added softly, “Kid, last night I heard you talking in your sleep again.”

My hands froze in place, and a few herbs slipped from my grasp. “What… what did I say?” I stammered, a knot tightening in my stomach.

“I couldn’t quite make out everything,” Kaya replied, shaking her head slowly. “But I did hear you calling out something like ‘Your Highness.’ My old ears aren’t as sharp as they used to be, so I’m not entirely sure.”

At her words, a sudden jolt shot through my chest, like an invisible needle had pierced my heart.

“Your Highness?” I echoed, shaking my head in bewilderment. Could I have been connected to royalty? “I don’t remember anything…”

“Don’t push yourself if it slips your mind,” Kaya advised, giving my shoulder a gentle pat with a bright smile. “Memories are like mist in the mountains—they’ll clear up once the sun shines.”

After I finished placing the last tray of herbs, I gazed out at the green mountains stretching far into the distance. Suddenly, an idea struck me. “Kaya, could you take me to the spot where you found me?”

Kaya hesitated for a moment, her hands still resting on the tray. “You want to go to the riverbank?”

“Yes,” I confirmed with a nod, my fingers instinctively brushing the necklace around my neck. “Maybe… I’ll find some clues there.”

Makenna’s POV:

“Alright, I’ll take you there, dear,” Kaya readily agreed, then paused, shaking her head hesitantly. “However…”

“What’s wrong?” My excitement dimmed slightly at her hesitation, curiosity creeping into my voice.

Kaya rubbed her rough fingers together anxiously and lowered her voice. “A few days ago, I heard the Wizard Clan’s king and his two princes were hunting in the mountains nearby. The villagers are staying indoors, afraid they’ll disturb the royal family…”
