Chapter 1293:

Kaya sighed, pulling a rough cloth from her pocket to dab the sweat from my brow. “It looks like you’ve taken a bad knock to the head.”

As she spoke, she pointed to the bandage wrapped around the back of my head. “There’s quite a nasty wound there. Could it be that you’ve lost your memory?”

I lost my memory?

A surge of unfamiliar fear washed over me.

Instinctively, I clutched Kaya’s hand. “Kaya, where am I?”

“This is Cloverdale, a small village on the edge of the Wizard Clan’s territory,” she said, her voice steady and soothing as she held my trembling hand. “It’s not far from the werewolf territory.”

She paused briefly before adding, “If you’re alright with it, you can stay here to heal for now.”

I gazed into her gentle eyes as though clinging to a lifeline. I had no other options. “Thank you so much, Kaya…” My voice trembled with emotion, tears spilling down my face before I could stop them.

Makenna’s POV:

After that, I spent several days at Kaya’s home to recover.

She had arranged for a doctor to examine me, and he explained that I had injured my head, which was the cause of my memory loss.

Every single night, the same dream returned. Sometimes I caught fleeting glimpses of figures that felt like people I knew, but no matter how hard I tried, their names always slipped away.

An ancient tree stood tall just outside Kaya’s house. Beneath its branches hung a plain swing that swayed gently in the wind.

I often perched on the swing, my toes barely brushing the dirt as it rocked slowly back and forth. From where I sat, I could see the distant mountains. They said the werewolves’ land lay just beyond those peaks.

I let my fingers trace the pendant resting against my chest, my thoughts wandering far away. At that moment, I felt utterly alone in the world. That necklace might be the only thing left to prove who I truly was.

“Trying to recall old times again?” Kaya stepped out of the house, carrying a steaming bowl of herbal medicine.

I managed a weak smile.

“Here, drink this,” she said gently, handing me the bowl.

The dark, earthy liquid gave off a sharp, bitter scent.

“I heard you coughing again this morning,” she added. “Are you feeling alright?”

I looked down, catching the pale reflection of my face and tired eyes in the surface of the medicine.

Suddenly, a coughing fit wracked my body, and a sharp, metallic taste flooded my mouth. I pressed a handkerchief to my lips, and bright red stains bloomed across the white cloth.

“My dear!” Kaya’s rough hands rubbed my back with care. “I know a little about medicine. Besides the injuries from your fall and that arrow, there are signs you’ve…”

…been poisoned too. This kind of poison is beyond what I can treat. You’ll need plenty of time to recover.”
