Chapter 1265:

“Hold still!” Dominic’s voice was sharp with urgency. “It’s a trap.”

He studied the slabs with keen focus and then declared, “We must tread the path of the Winter Triangle—Sirius first, then Procyon, and finally Betelgeuse.”

Heart pounding, I followed his lead, stepping gingerly from slab to slab. Just as we neared the corridor’s end, a volley of venom-tipped arrows erupted from the walls.

“Dominic!” I cried, lunging forward instinctively.

A poisoned arrow grazed my arm, igniting a searing agony.

“Makenna!” Dominic whirled, catching me as I stumbled, his arms a steadfast anchor around me.

His hands shook as he inspected my wound, his face drained of color, paler than the snow. “Are you alright? Does it burn?”

I managed a frail smile, but my vision wavered, the world tilting dangerously. The venom coursed through my veins, unleashing waves of vertigo that threatened to pull me under.

“Makenna… stay with me… don’t close your eyes…” Dominic’s voice grew distant, a fading lifeline.

I clung to his collar, my fingers trembling with fading strength.

“Dominic…” My voice came out in a whisper, barely a breath, as my fingers weakly grasped his collar.

Tears glistened in his eyes as he choked out, “I’m here, Makenna. I’m not leaving you.”

“The white wolves… can heal wounds… but not poison…” Each word drained me further. “Am I going to die?”

Makenna’s POV:

“Don’t talk like that; you’re not going to die. I won’t let it happen,” Dominic told me firmly.

His arms tightened around me, pulling me into his embrace as though he was holding onto a lifeline.

I felt warm tears landing on my face—he was crying.

The proud, tough, and usually distant man was now holding me tightly, shedding tears.

“Makenna!” His voice sounded rough and strained from his crying, and his trembling fingers gently brushed my cheek. “You won’t die… I won’t let that happen…”

I nodded in response, pressing myself deeper into Dominic’s arms, thinking that perhaps only by doing so could I feel a little safer.

At that moment, loud footsteps and the metallic clatter of armor echoed down the corridor.

The Iron Scale Guards were drawing near!

Without hesitation, Dominic’s body stiffened. A spark of resolve flickered in his eyes.

“Make sure you stay right here and don’t move,” he said softly. Gently, he guided me into the corner and draped his coat over my shoulders.

I clung to Dominic’s hand, my voice trembling with worry. “Where are you going?” I asked, watching him anxiously.

Dominic simply gave me a reassuring look and gently patted my head. “Don’t worry,” he said softly, “I’ll come back for you.”
