Chapter 1261:

“How do you feel? Does it hurt?” I asked, my voice shaking slightly. I gently touched the edge of the wound, but I quickly pulled my hand back, worried I might cause him more pain.

Dominic, however, managed a faint, pale smile. He gently wiped the blood from my face.

At some point, my tears had blended with the blood, flowing down my cheeks.

“Nothing,” he whispered softly, “just a scratch.”

I bit my lip nervously and tore off a piece of my sleeve. My hands trembled as I wrapped the cloth around his shoulder to bandage the wound.

His muscles tightened as the fabric was wrapped tightly, but he stayed silent, not making a sound.

“That bow you tied is downright ugly,” he suddenly commented, breaking the silence. I looked up, meeting his amused expression.

Laughter burst from me, tears streaming down my face even more. “Seriously? Now’s not the time for jokes!”

The heavy, tense air finally started to lighten a little.

I continued to support him as we moved further up the mountain.

His weight pressed heavily on me, making every step a real struggle.

Makenna’s POV:

The mountain path rose like a challenge, each incline steeper than the last. With every labored step, Dominic’s stride faltered.

I braced his weight against mine, alarmed as the familiar warmth of his body began to ebb away beneath my fingertips.

Behind us, the faint yet relentless sound of pursuit echoed through the mountain air, drawing nearer with each passing moment.

It was a team of Leonardo’s elite guards—the Iron Scale Guards! They followed the crimson trail of blood Dominic left in the snow—a beacon leading straight to us.

“Quick, go!” Dominic gasped, his hand trembling as he urged me forward. “They’re catching up.”

I gritted my teeth, steely determination flooding my veins as I tugged him into a narrow mountain trail that cut between the towering pines.

The fresh snowfall concealed our tracks, but its pristine blanket left us utterly disoriented in the vast white wilderness.

The sky transformed into a slate-gray canvas as heavy clouds gathered overhead. Icy wind whipped across our faces, each gust like tiny daggers against our exposed skin.

“We’re in for some bad weather,” Dominic remarked, his gaze fixed on the ominous sky as his brows pulled together in concern.

The biting cold had drained his lips of color to an alarming pallor, and the wound on his shoulder had reopened, saturating the makeshift bandage with fresh crimson blood that bloomed like a terrible flower.

Suddenly, a fierce wind howled across the landscape, bringing with it a wall of snow that transformed the world into a blinding white void.

We stumbled forward blindly, our bodies hunched against the biting cold, until the dark mouth of a hidden cave emerged like a miracle from the swirling whiteness.

“Get inside!” Dominic commanded, using his body as a shield as we ducked into the cave’s sanctuary. The sudden movement tore at his wound, forcing him to his knees with a muffled groan that he couldn’t quite suppress.
