Chapter 1226:

Alden made a soft hum, but his face lit up with a proud grin, clearly pleased that I was concerned.

“Makenna, you underestimate me!” he said confidently. “I’ve led troops into battle more times than I can count. A little thing like this won’t trip me up.”

His self-assured attitude made me smile, but the feeling didn’t last long. Soon, a heavy weight settled in my chest. The thought of the dangers he would face pressed heavily on my heart. The Lycan palace was full of risks, where one wrong step could spell disaster.

I spoke quietly, my tone serious.

“Alden, you must be careful. The palace is full of hidden dangers. It’s not that simple.”

Alden, however, waved his hand dismissively and tousled my hair with a relaxed smile.

“Makenna, don’t worry. I’ve been through this kind of thing before. Nothing will go wrong.”

I furrowed my brow slightly. His self-assurance gave me a small measure of reassurance, but my concerns still overshadowed it.

I fixed my gaze directly on his eyes and spoke with purpose.

“Alden,” I said carefully, “this isn’t a small matter. The ancient texts aren’t the real issue. Your life is what matters most. You have to come back safe.”

Alden was caught off guard for a brief moment, then unexpectedly broke into a smile. He lowered his head slightly, his playful eyes locking onto mine, and said sincerely,

“Makenna, are you really worried about me?”

His stare was so intense that it made me feel uncomfortable. I looked away, trying to hide the chaos in my eyes.

“You’re my friend,” I admitted softly. “Of course I’m worried about you.”

But Alden wasn’t satisfied with my answer. He pinched my face gently to make me look at him. His eyes softened immediately, showing tenderness, but a flicker of expectation lingered there. He spoke softly, with a tempting tone, asking,

“Just friends?”

I responded swiftly, my heart pounding.

“What else?”

Alden’s gaze darkened briefly, and he looked down, seeming hurt.

“Makenna, you’re breaking my heart,” he admitted quietly. He then let go of me, his voice tinged with sadness as he accused,

“I love you so deeply, but you only see me as a friend.”

I was caught off guard, my feelings tangled and confused. For some reason, Alden’s declaration of love made me uncomfortable, even though I saw how genuine his feelings were.

Before I had a chance to respond, he suddenly took action. One hand tugged at my clothing and brushed against my chest through the fabric.

“Makenna, is this how friends act?” he whispered softly, his other hand gently stroking my thigh. “Would normal friends do something like this?”

My face turned bright red instantly, and I squirmed, trying to pull away. I gently reminded him,

“Alden, stop it! You have to leave tomorrow. You should get some rest tonight.”
