Chapter 1209:

I pushed aside any thoughts of breakfast or washing up and made a beeline for the conference hall.

Inside, the atmosphere was electric with tension.

Bryan moved back and forth in front of me, his face dark with frustration. After an uneasy pause, he finally broke the silence. His tone was icy and firm.

“Makenna, these folks have completely lost it. We need to hit hard and fast—crush the rebellion before it spreads. If we wait, it’ll blow up in our faces.”

My heart thudded in my chest, but I kept my voice calm. I gave a slight shake of my head.

“No. If we go in with violence, we’ll just pour fuel on the fire. Their outrage has roots. We need to hear them out, not make things worse.”

Bryan’s eyes narrowed, a clear storm brewing in his mind.

“Makenna, you’re letting your feelings get in the way! This is no time for soft hearts. We can’t stand around and do nothing!”

I looked him straight in the eye, standing firm. “Bryan, I hear what you’re saying. But I’ve made my decision. I’ll go speak to them myself. If we want peace, we have to prove we mean it.”

Bryan hesitated for a moment, then finally gave in with a long, weary sigh.

Before long, I headed out with a handful of guards, making my way toward the city square where the townspeople had assembled. The square was packed with angry faces, their fury hanging in the air like a storm about to break.

As soon as they caught sight of me, whispers surged through the crowd like wind through dry leaves.

Someone shouted at the top of their lungs, “Leave Marehelm! We want the king!”

I met their gazes without flinching, my voice calm and sincere. “I get where you’re coming from. Marehelm is your homeland, and you have every right to decide your own fate. But think about this—will the king really care about you? He’ll use Marehelm as a tool in his wars, trapping you in a cycle of misery.”

“Your fake pity is worthless!” someone taunted. “Since you showed up, Marehelm hasn’t had a single peaceful moment!”

“Exactly!” another person yelled, and the crowd roared in agreement.

I knew that just talking wouldn’t change their minds.

Remembering what Leonardo had done, I carried on, saying, “I know you don’t trust me, but listen closely. Leonardo Reeves isn’t the kindhearted ruler you think he is. He locks up the white wolves, drains their blood for his sick experiments, and sacrifices innocent lives to fuel his own ambitions!”

“Prove it! His Majesty has been in charge of the werewolves for years—how could he be like that?” someone demanded.

“Exactly!” another person sneered, backing up the doubt.

Just then, Alden rushed forward, his voice cutting through the heavy silence. “Have you all forgotten the time when you were under that magic potion’s spell? It was Makenna who saved you, using her own blood. Without her, many of you wouldn’t be here today!”

His words hit home. Some people in the crowd hesitated, their faces shifting from defiance to uncertain consideration.

Still, some stubborn voices kept shouting.

“So what? His Majesty has ruled over the werewolves for years—why should we trust this woman?”
