Chapter 1208
Chapter 1208:
His outright challenge pushed me over the edge. I threw my hand out in fury, teeth clenched as I shouted, “Guards! Seize Antoni!”
Soldiers rushed in from the hall’s entrance, spears raised, quickly surrounding him.
“Are you really going to burn this bridge?” Antoni asked, his eyes scanning the armed guards. Yet his voice carried not a trace of fear.
As the tension reached its breaking point, the doors to the hall flew open, and a scout rushed in.
“Your Majesty! Urgent news!” The scout dropped to one knee, his face grave.
I scowled, a wave of impatience rising within me. “What is it? Spit it out.”
The scout looked up, his eyes wide with excitement. “Your Majesty, the people of Marehelm—they’ve had enough of Makenna and her allies! They want to pledge their loyalty to you!”
“What?” A mix of surprise and joy struck me at once. The news came so suddenly, I could barely wrap my head around it.
I glanced at Antoni and caught his own brief shock, a flicker of surprise flashing across his face. But he recovered almost instantly. The gloom vanished, replaced by a smug, self-satisfied grin. He stepped forward, practically glowing with excitement.
“Your Majesty, this is a golden opportunity! We must send agents into Marehelm right away. We’ll stir up rebellion from within and take the city!”
I nodded, a rush of joy flooding me, but suspicion soon shadowed it. Antoni—this sly traitor who had just moments ago dared to threaten me—was now practically buzzing with enthusiasm to please. It was a performance I found utterly unreliable. His smile sent a shiver down my spine, as though it concealed some darker, hidden plot.
“You’re right, Antoni,” I said, my voice steady but sharp, probing for any hint of his true intentions. “But we must tread carefully. We can’t afford another failure.”

Antoni nodded stiffly, saying nothing more.
A cold, calculating grin spread across my face as my mind began to race. This plan wasn’t just about taking Marehelm; it was also about finding the right moment to rid myself of Antoni—this treacherous snake—once and for all.
The next morning, I opened my eyes, only to find Clayton had vanished from my side, though he’d been right there not long ago.
Knock, knock, knock…
As I was about to get up and wash my face, someone banged hard on the door, fast and loud—like they were desperate.
“Makenna, we’re in trouble!” came Evie’s voice, sharp with fear and shaking.
My brain kicked into gear. I jumped out of bed and threw on some clothes in a rush. “What’s going on? Come inside and tell me everything.”
Evie came charging in, her expression tight with anxiety.
“Makenna, the townsfolk—they’re getting ready to rebel! Some of them want to throw open the gates and let Leonardo’s army march right in!”
I stood rooted to the spot, her words hitting me like a slap.
Could the people of Marehelm really despise me and my allies to this point?
“Go get the princes—fast! We have to gather in the conference hall and come up with a strategy!” I said.
“On it!” Evie said, spun on her heel, and ran.
