Chapter 1205:

By myself, I made my way to the gate tower. Once there, I stood at the edge of the platform, taking in the vast view of the land. Paula’s face kept popping into my head.

“Makenna.” A soft voice came from behind me.

I spun around and saw Clayton walking toward me.

He looked worried, his expression tense. As he got closer, he gently placed his arm around my shoulders.

“Makenna, you were right. This was the only way to warn any possible traitors and keep Marehelm from falling apart.”

I nodded, but my heart was still in knots.

Clayton didn’t say anything else. He just held my hand, offering quiet comfort.

Thoughts of everything that had happened with Paula hit me all at once. My heart twisted in pain.

Her sacrifice felt like a heavy weight on my chest, as if a massive stone was pressing down on me, making it hard to breathe.

“I just hope Paula can find peace,” I murmured.

Clayton agreed softly, “She will find peace. She will understand everything you’ve done for her.”

I didn’t reply, just gave a quiet nod.

When I got back to the Pierce family estate, Evie was waiting by the gates.

She rushed up to me as soon as she saw me, her voice urgent.

“Makenna, did you avenge Paula?”

Our eyes met, and a sharp wave of sorrow washed over me.

Evie’s eyes were swollen, filled with worry as she studied me closely. I hung my head, my voice heavy with shame.

“Evie, it was my bad choice… my mistake… that led to Paula’s death. I… I failed her.”

Evie softly brushed my tears away, her voice a gentle whisper.

“Makenna, this isn’t on you. It’s Leonardo and Antoni who are to blame. Paula… she would never blame you.”

I raised my eyes to her, but the guilt felt even stronger.

Since Paula had taken the time to comfort Evie, their bond had grown stronger, which only deepened my regret. It made me feel even more guilty for failing Evie’s trust.

Seeing the guilt all over my face, Evie wrapped me in a tight hug.

“Makenna, this isn’t your fault. You need to find the strength to face the real enemies and make sure justice is served.”

Her sudden hug took me by surprise, but it brought a wave of warmth to my heart.

“Yes,” I managed to choke out, nodding into her embrace. “Evie, thank you. I’ll get stronger. I’ll make sure Paula is avenged.”

But just as one wave of grief began to fade, another wave of trouble hit, ready to drag me down. Within Marehelm, the undercurrents of unrest kept growing, threatening to break the surface.

Some of the people were getting more and more upset, feeling that our presence had shattered the peace the city once knew. Just then, a loud ruckus came from outside the gates.
