Chapter 1177:

A tide of relief surged through me, easing the heavy burden in my chest, though a stubborn knot of guilt lingered still.

In the quiet of my heart, I made a solemn vow. I’d shield both Alice and Winfred with everything I had. No harm would touch them again.

Alice, ever attuned to my restless spirit, deftly shifted the topic. “Makenna, tell me about your life in Marehelm. How did you slip through the king’s grasp?”

“After Jett and I fled the palace, Antoni’s men hounded us like shadows. We dove into the sea’s embrace, and through a gauntlet of perils, we finally found refuge in Marehelm.”

I took a steadying breath and poured out the tale, every twist and turn laid bare.

Alice’s face clouded with concern as she listened, her hand tightening around mine, her voice quivering like a leaf in the wind. “Makenna, I swear, I’ll stand by you always. Whatever storms come, we’ll weather them together.”

Her eyes locked with mine, and I nodded, my resolve as firm as stone. “Together.”

At that moment, a delicate knock tapped at the door, shattering the tranquil moment we shared.

Alice glanced up, her voice a warm, inviting melody. “Come in.” The door swung open, and Amon stepped through, a faint blush coloring his cheeks with a shy glow.

Catching sight of me by Alice’s bedside, he faltered, a touch of awkwardness draping over him like a cloak. “Miss Dunn… I didn’t expect to see you here,” he mumbled, his words tripping over themselves.

I met his gaze, a mischievous spark dancing in my eyes, a teasing smile curling my lips. “Amon, don’t tell me you came all this way just to steal a moment with Alice?”

Makenna’s POV:

Amon’s face turned scarlet as if he had been scorched by a flame, and he stammered out, “I just wanted to see if Alice needed anything…”

“Oh, is that so?” I chuckled, unable to resist teasing him as a mischievous smile curled on my lips. “Well, what Alice truly needs right now is rest—not your help, you know.”

At that, Alice let out a soft giggle, covering her mouth.

Probably feeling a twinge of sympathy for poor, flustered Amon, Alice reached over and gave my hand a gentle pat. With a playful glance, she scolded lightly, “Makenna, be nice.”

At her words, I relented, the grin slipping from my face, though a trace of amusement still lingered in my eyes.

Meanwhile, Amon lingered awkwardly by the door, unsure whether to step inside or make a run for it. His blush deepened, creeping all the way up to the tips of his ears.

Scratching his head and shifting from foot to foot, he mumbled, almost too softly to catch, “Were… were you two talking? Did I barge in at the wrong time?”

I rose from my seat, still smiling easily, my gaze flickering between him and Alice. “Amon,” I said lightly, “since you’re here, I’ll leave you two alone. Just make sure Alice gets plenty of rest, alright?”

“I will,” Amon said quickly, finally mustering the courage to step fully into the room.

Before stepping away, I shot Amon a meaningful glance, leaned in just a touch, and said in a low, earnest voice, “Look after her—she deserves nothing less.”

Amon froze for a second, then gave a small, serious nod. “I promise.”
