Chapter 1165
Chapter 1165:
“Are you Makenna Dunn?” Colt asked, his gaze scrutinizing me.
His cold gaze met mine, and I looked away with contempt.
Colt remained unfazed. He clapped his hands, and the next second, a number of footsteps could be heard approaching us.
I looked toward the source of the sound with anxious anticipation.
I watched as Alice was roughly dragged out by two black-clad men.
Her face was pale, and her lips were cracked. She looked exhausted and terrified, her garments torn in multiple places. She was half-supported by the men, unable to walk on her own, but still holding Winfred tightly in her arms.
Winfred’s tiny face was buried in her chest.
Seeing Alice in such a terrible state broke my heart.
“Alice! Winfred!” I called out. I moved toward them, half-blinded by my tears, but one of Colt’s men blocked my way.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Colt sneered at me. “Did you think you could simply take them without giving me what I asked for? That won’t happen!”
“You…” I growled, a murderous look on my face. “Let them go. Take me instead.”
“Restrain yourself, Makenna!” Jett barked, pulling me back.
He then turned to Colt and calmly said, “I’ll go with you, but you must release Alice and Winfred first.”
“Fair enough,” Colt said with a smirk. He then signaled with a wave of his hand that Alice and Winfred be let go.
The black-clad men released Alice, and her body immediately lurched forward.
I, however, quickly darted forward and caught her before she could fall to the ground.
“Are you alright, Alice? Are you hurt anywhere?” I asked, my voice laced with concern.

Alice slumped weakly in my arms. “Makenna… I’m sorry. I… I couldn’t protect Winfred…”
The guilt in Alice’s words gutted me.
I gently smoothed her hair and said, “I know you did your best, Alice. It’s over now.”
Winfred seemed to recognize me because his small hand suddenly clutched my collar.
I looked down at him and saw him smile sweetly.
My eyes blurred as I struggled to keep from crying. I hugged him tightly, pressing his small body to my chest.
In that moment, all that mattered to me was holding him.
Colt’s derisive laughter soon shattered the warming moment I was sharing with my son.
“You’re getting ahead of yourselves,” he said, sounding amused. “Don’t forget that they both experience the effects of the Wizard Clan potion I gave them.”
In that moment, it felt like a hand squeezed hard at my heart.
“Hand over the antidote!” I glared at Colt.
“Or what?” Colt retorted as he arched an eyebrow. “What would happen if I don’t?”
“Are you going back on your word?” Jett asked menacingly.
