Chapter 792
The passing of time had taken away their youth and also their feelings. Jack became certain then that being together with Bella had become an impossibility.
It made every second that he spent with her feel like he was sitting on pins and needles, and he was nearly overwhelmed with the urge to run away as quickly as possible. Thus, Jack made the executive decision to take matters into his own hands.
They stood together on the bridge for a few more moments before Jack mumbled, "I... Something came up suddenly. If there's nothing else, I'll be taking my leave for now."
His words did not match the emotions in his heart. He hoped that Bella would try to get him to stay.
Bella finally decided that it was a good time for her to speak. "Why don't we get dinner together?"
"There's no need," Jack rejected her suggestion decisively.
Although Bella had done what he had hoped and tried to get him to stay, Jack felt even more disappointed than before. He could tell from her tone and expression that she was just being courteous by asking him to have dinner together.
Jack recalled the times he had spent jogging with Bella in the mountains behind Alnewgo University. He also thought about the time when Bella had sought him out first, suggesting to rekindle their relationship after they had a fight. She had told him then that she wasn't willing to let go of him. Her words had moved Jack to the core. ɪꜰ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴏʀᴇ ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀs, ᴘʟᴇᴀsᴇ ᴠɪsɪᴛ find•novel.net
At that moment, he hoped that a miracle would happen. He hoped that Bella would sprint toward him and hold him tight, telling him that she didn't want him to go. They would get back together then and spend the rest of their lives together.
Unfortunately, the miracle he had hoped for did not happen. As he disappeared into the night, he didn't hear Bella's hurried footsteps as she chased after him. He didn't hear her sighs either, or receive any indication from her that she wanted him to stay.
Jack was thoroughly convinced that they had reached the end of their
relationship, but he had no idea what thoughts Bella was keeping hidden in her heart.
The truth was, Bella really wanted to have dinner with Jack. She wanted to run over to him to tell him that her indifference was not how she truly felt about him.
In the end, her rationality won over her heart. She knew that it was impossible for her to have a relationship with Jack. A massive obstacle stood between herself and Jack in the form of her mother, Clarice, as well as the other members of her huge and frightening family.
Clarice had once told Bella that Jack was unworthy of her if he wasn't worth over 10 million dollars. However, Bella knew that this was just an excuse.
The reality was that Clarice looked down upon Jack. No matter how talented Jack was as a person, he wasn't talented enough to have 10 million dollars to his name, which in turn failed to change Clarice's opinion of him.
Bella was also aware of the consequences that would befall her if she got together with Jack. They wouldn't be able to withstand Clarice's schemes even if they pooled their strength together.
Jack had been her hero once upon a time, but when it came down to it, he had failed to change Clarice's opinion of him, and he had also failed to sweep her off her feet with his achievements.
Even today, he had given off a shabby impression by offering her the bouquet of morning glories. Although Bella was born with a silver spoon in her mouth, she wouldn't be against dating Jack. But she couldn't possibly change how society would view their relationship, and she also couldn't oppose whatever obstacle Clarice would throw at them.
If she had that sort of power, she wouldn't have conceded to Clarice in the first place. She wouldn't even be in the capital at that moment. Faced with the omnipotent authority of Clarice and Jasper's family, her cowardliness was actually the only way she could protect herself as well as Jack.
A year had passed, but Jack and Bella's reunion had only ended in disappointment. The next time Jack visited Montclair again, it would probably be
for an event. Besides that, he was convinced that he would bid farewell to Montclair Conservatory forever more.
The next day, a news article appeared, describing how Hugo's grand confession had been disrupted by a male construction worker from a nearby site. The man had also whisked the goddess of Montclair, Bella, away with him.
The article spread like wildfire online and was discussed on the forums of hundreds of schools in the capital. It had even started trending on the hot topic chart.
The general public was not privy to the complicated relationship between Jack and Bella. They were simply interested in discussing the topic itself. Video recordings of that night began to circulate on the forums, including the part where Jack had offered the bouquet of morning glories to Bella.
Their expressions at that moment had been captured clearly in the recording. The masses also noticed Bella's visceral reaction when she first laid eyes on Jack, which hinted at how their relationship was more complicated than it appeared to be at first glance. Bella wouldn't have reacted so intensely if it was her first time meeting Jack.
They wondered if Jack was the boyfriend that Bella had brought up and also wondered just who exactly Jack was.
