Chapter 790

None of the onlookers' opinions mattered to Bella. Everyone had a different perspective on love, after all.

Hugo was a good man, but she did not love him. On the other hand, while Jack looked like an ordinary guy, he was her first love.

Magdalene and Cynthia were stunned as they watched the scene before them unfold. They had thought that he had only been joking around, but he had gone ahead and confessed as he had said he would.

When they observed Bella's reaction, it became clear that she cared greatly about Jack too. The situation was completely out of their expectations.

The person who was stuck in the most awkward position was undoubtedly Hugo, who was still kneeling on the ground, arms still extended as he offered his bouquet to Bella. He had planned to get up only after Bella told him to, but her eyes were glued to Jack at that moment, and she didn't even spare him a single glance.

Hugo felt as if he had turned into a laughingstock and wished he could dig a hole to hide himself in. It was the first time in his life that he had experienced such aggravation.

While the surrounding students watched the scene before them unfold with surprised expressions, some of them also shot sympathetic looks in Hugo's direction. He was truly caught in the worst situation. It became clear that no matter how handsome or rich a man was, there was no guarantee that he could win the hand of the beauty he had his sights on.

Hugo's friends had also ceased setting off the fireworks as they watched the scene unfold with slackened jaws. They felt as if they were watching a television drama, but the hidden twist was much too ridiculous. They had anticipated various outcomes after Hugo confessed, but they never could have guessed that Jack would make a sudden appearance to throw a wrench into Hugo's plans.

"I looked for you," Jack explained. "I asked Luna, Gigi, and Remy, but they told me that they had lost contact with you."

Bella nodded. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she looked as if she had so many things to say, but didn't know how or where to start.

It was only then that she realized Hugo was still kneeling on the ground. The roses looked vibrant under the glow of the light, a huge contrast to the upset expression that Hugo was wearing on his face.

There were only two words that Bella could possibly say to him. "I'm sorry!" she exclaimed.

At that moment, it was as if everyone present could hear Hugo's heart shattering into a million pieces. He wanted to tell her that it was alright, but his face twisted, and he found that he couldn't force the words out no matter how hard he tried.

If there weren't so many people surrounding them, he might even have started ranting at them. Without a doubt, this was the humiliating day of Hugo's life.

However, Bella didn't care about any of that. Why would she concern herself with Hugo when Jack was standing right before her?

She pinned Jack with an unwavering stare. A silent conversation passed between the both of them before Jack shot her a smile. As if it was the most natural thing in the world, Jack took Bella's hand and led her away under the scrutinizing gaze of everyone present.

The crowd realized then that if it wasn't for the morning glories that Bella was clutching in her hand, Jack and her would make for a beautiful couple, stirring up feelings of envy in many people's hearts. Get full chapters from Find★Novel.net

Only after Jack and Bella had disappeared from their sights did Hugo toss the roses in his hand to the ground in a fit of anger. He stomped on the sea of flowers around him as if he had lost his mind before angrily taking his leave.

Although chaos had erupted at the scene of Hugo's failed confession, all was calm and silent where Jack and Bella stood beside a lake. They were facing each other and had so much to say to one another, yet they weren't sure where or how to start.

The air between them was familiar and strange at the same time. They ended up staring at each other for a long time, feeling as if an invisible gap had formed between them during the time they spent apart.

"You won't blame me for ruining Hugo's confession to you, will you?" Jack asked finally, testing the waters.

Bella shook her head before answering softly, "Why would I? I don't have feelings for him. Besides, you're here, so it only makes sense for me to reject him."

She gave Jack a once-over, realizing that he had grown even bigger and taller since she left Alnewgo University. Despite the night that blanketed them, Jack's eyes still sparkled like stars. He still had his signature smile on as well, a feature of his that would make anyone's heart flutter even if he didn't say or do anything.

It felt like everything had changed but also stayed the same.
