Devin couldn't help but chuckle with delight at the thought.

A bodyguard walking beside him suddenly tensed up, his expression uneasy. "Boss, something's off about these laborers."

Devin frowned, finally sensing something was wrong. "What do you mean?"

The bodyguard lowered his voice. "They look more like street thugs-the kind who run with gangs."

Devin's heart skipped a beat. He turned to look and saw the laborers ahead quickening their pace, as if trying to flee.

He barked, "Hey, you up ahead! Stop right there—I've got questions for you!"

Instead of stopping, the laborers broke into a run.

Furious, he roared, "Stop! One more step, and you'll be sorry!"

The threat only made them sprint.

Devin snarled, "After them!"

It was bad enough to be repeatedly humiliated by Jack and his crew. But now, he'd been duped by a few conmen dressed up as construction workers. If this got out back in Tarthy, he'd lose every shred of dignity he had left.

The bodyguards sprang into action, chasing with all their might.

Realizing they were being pursued, the laborers panicked and ducked into an alley. Soon, the sounds of a violent scuffle and cries of pain echoed from within.

Hearing this, Devin smirked, his anger easing slightly. "So, Jack's bunch wants to go to war with me? Fine. But you little punks? You've got a death wish, messing with someone like me!"

But his triumph was short-lived.

The bodyguards who'd charged into the alley came stumbling back out, battered and terrified. "Boss, run! It's a trap!"

"What?" Devin's face turned pale as he struggled to process what had happened.

"We've been ambushed! They're attacking us!" The bodyguards struggled to their feet and dragged him away.

These bodyguards were former special forces-elite among elites. But the moment they stepped into the alley, they were ambushed by a group of burly men wielding machetes. Caught off guardand outmatched they barely put up a fight. Within moments, they were completely overwhelmed.

This was anything but a ragtag bunch. They were a pack of ruthless, well-trained thugs.

The bodyguards had barely dragged Devin out of the alley when another wave of baton-wielding gangsters surged from the opposite end. They were trapped in a deadly pincer.

Blades flashed, and blood splattered everywhere.

By the time the sun dipped below the horizon, the attackers had retreated like a receding tide. Devin and his men were left battered, their faces a mess of blood. They lay sprawled on the ground, unable to move.

At some point, Devin's pants had been torn open, and his groin had been stomped on. Every inch of his body screamed in agony, his arms and legs clearly fractured. All he could do was lie there staring at the sky, gasping for breath. .net

For the first time, he felt the cold grip of death.

This was no accident. It was a setup.

From the very beginning, their every move had been orchestrated by that devil, Jack Every plan, every step-Devin had been dancing in the palm of his hand. If he stayed here. any longer Jack would finish pin oft for good.

That monster...

"Is anyone... still alive?" Devin croaked.

He heard someone groan faintly in response. They were all breathing, but no one

could get up.

The thugs had been precise. Their attacks weren't deadly, just cruel enough to leave them all broken for months.

Devin stared up at the sky, jaw clenched, too shattered to even cry.
