Chapter 1338
Chapter 1338:
In an instant, he melted into the shadows.
“Miss Dunn!” Lucian stormed into the garden, flanked by a cadre of guards who swiftly encircled me. His keen eyes raked over me with suspicion. “What are you doing out here?”
His gaze narrowed, flicking to the swing still swaying gently in the breeze.
“Have you seen anyone lurking about?”
Makenna’s POV:
“I couldn’t sleep… just needed some air.”
I steadied my breath, willing my heartbeat to quiet its frenzied thrum. The night wind had tugged my collar loose, and I adjusted it with slow fingers, pretending calm.
“I didn’t see anyone,” I added, hoping the lie didn’t tremble on my lips.
Lucian’s eyes pinned me in place—sharp, knowing, unnervingly precise. He didn’t speak right away, but the way his gaze dissected me made my skin prickle.
Then, with a barely-there nod, he murmured, “Miss Dunn, you should return to your room. The air is cold tonight. We wouldn’t want Prince Jett growing anxious over your health.”
The faint warmth tucked behind his words made me hesitate. For a moment, I simply stared, unsure if I’d imagined it.
“Alright.” I gave a small nod, and watched as he turned, the soldiers falling into step behind him. Only once their boots faded into silence did I allow the stiffness to bleed from my body.
Then—rustling. A sudden whisper of movement behind the hedges snapped my attention around.
Dominic stepped out of the shadows like a ghost. His eyes, stormy and unrelenting, locked on mine with such fierce urgency, it felt as though he feared I might vanish.

“Makenna,” he breathed, closing the space between us, his voice rough with emotion. “Come with me. I’ll take you away from here.” He grabbed my wrist. His grip was fierce—possessive—too tight.
“I don’t even know you!” I yanked back, retreating two shaky steps. “The guards are hunting you. You have to leave!”
His expression shifted. The softness cracked, replaced by something darker. Brooding. Unstable.
He advanced, slow and deliberate, pressing me back until I felt the unyielding bark of a tree at my spine. His voice dropped to a gravelly whisper, low and fierce. “Makenna… how can you say that? Did Jett do something to you? How could you forget me?”
His breath fanned against my cheek, and inexplicably, a dull ache bloomed in my chest.
I turned my face away, refusing to meet his burning gaze. “The doctor said I hit my head. I lost my memory.”
A tremor passed through him. His jaw clenched as though he might shatter from within. Then, tenderly—achingly—his hand rose, trembling, and brushed against the crown of my head. “I should’ve protected you,” he whispered. “This is my fault.”
His touch made my entire body go rigid. Yet… I didn’t pull away.
