Chapter 1322
Chapter 1322:
Two months. It had been two months since the ambush at the werewolf mountains. We’d scoured every inch of the area, again and again.
I’d lost count of the nights I dreamed of Makenna, blood-soaked and slipping away from me. And now, finally…
“But the trail’s gone cold again,” Alden muttered, scuffing a pebble down the road in frustration.
Just as we were about to leave, my eyes caught the neighboring mud-brick house. A sliver of light leaked from a cracked window, and behind the curtain, I glimpsed a shadow peeking at us.
Our eyes met for a split second before the figure yanked the curtain shut.
Alden followed my gaze, raising an eyebrow.
We exchanged a look, understanding passing between us. In a few strides, Alden was at the weathered wooden door, knocking hard.
The door creaked open, and we were hit by a wave of sharp medicinal odors. A burly, middle-aged man stood in the doorway, propped on a crutch. His right leg was wrapped in a bloodied bandage, and his left arm hung limp in a sling. His sharp, wary eyes darted over us before settling on Alden. His voice was gravelly, edged with hostility. “What do you want?”
Without a word, Alden produced Makenna’s photo and thrust it under his nose. “Have you seen this woman?”
The man’s eyes widened, and his face twitched involuntarily. In the next instant, he exploded, slamming his crutch on the ground. “Damn it! That bitch is why my leg’s busted!”
The three of us froze, blindsided. How was this man’s injury connected to Makenna? What had really happened here?
“Where is she?” I demanded, seizing his good shoulder in a steely grip. He grimaced, pain twisting his mouth. “She was staying at Kaya’s place. I thought she was a real beauty…”

Alden’s fist crashed into his face with a sickening crunch. The crack of his nose breaking was unmistakable.
Alden yanked him upright by the collar, snarling, “What the heck did you do to her?”
“Nothing! I swear, nothing!” the man blubbered, blood streaming down his face. “I chased her up the mountain, but before I could lay a hand on her, some guy swooped in and rescued her—”
“Who saved her?” Alden barked, his voice sharp as a whip.
“I think… I think it was someone from the Wizard Clan’s royal family… Yes, that’s it, the royal family!” the man stammered, trembling.
Clayton and I exchanged a look of disbelief. The royal family of the Wizard Clan? Could it have been… Jett?
“You laid a finger on Makenna? I’ll kill you!” Alden roared, smashing his fist into the man again, leaving him sprawled on the ground, twitching like a beaten animal.
“Let’s go!” I said coldly, sweeping my gaze over the man’s bloodied, tear-streaked face. “We’re heading straight for the Wizard Clan palace.”
Alden spat out a final curse and kicked the man once more before following us.
Makenna’s POV:
The next morning, my hand instinctively reached for the place where Jett had slept. It was already cold—he was long gone.
