Chapter 1282:

The edge of the cliff—already weakened by the battle—crumbled under my weight, and I tumbled backward into the bottomless void below.

The last thing I saw was Dominic’s and Bryan’s desperate screams, their hands outstretched, trying in vain to catch me.

The wild wind’s roar drowned out every other sound as the freefall swallowed me whole, dragging my mind into total darkness…

Dominic’s POV:

“Makenna!”

I stood frozen, my heart sinking as Makenna was struck by an arrow and plummeted into the chasm, the swirling mist swallowing her whole.

“Makenna!”

My anguished cries reverberated across the valley as I rushed to the cliff’s edge, desperation driving me forward.

“Makenna! Makenna!”

My voice cracked, futile against the endless void, as loose pebbles scattered beneath my frantic steps. My fingers clawed at the jagged rock, as if I could somehow drag her back from the abyss.

“The sacred artifact!” My father’s icy voice cut through the air behind us, dripping with disdain. “It fell with Makenna! Fall back at once!”

“Think you can just walk away?” Bryan’s furious roar thundered through the chaos.

I turned, my movements stiff and mechanical, and saw Bryan charging into the enemy ranks. His hair, matted with blood, gleamed under the dim light. In moments, he had overpowered our father and his royal guards, leaving them subdued.

The remaining foes, disarmed and defeated, knelt in surrender across the scarred battlefield.

Bryan flung our bound father to his own guards and bolted toward the cliff.

When he saw me collapsed at the edge, his steps faltered.

“Makenna…” His voice quivered, heavy with dread.

I tried to speak, but my throat betrayed me. All I could manage was a stiff nod. Bryan’s eyes blazed with anguish. In a heartbeat, he turned on Amon, slamming his boot into the man’s chest.

“Worthless!” he roared, seizing Amon by the collar and striking him with a flurry of blows. “I ordered you to protect her! To keep her safe!”

Blood trickled from Amon’s lips, yet he stood still, accepting the punishment without resistance. “I deserve death,” he murmured.

I stared blankly, the mournful wail of the wind filling my ears, a haunting echo of my grief.

Below, the mist churned in the abyss, claiming the one I cherished most. My hand still clung to the fading warmth of her touch, now replaced by a piercing, bone-deep cold.

“Makenna…” I whispered, my voice a fractured shadow of itself.

Amon, witnessing my despair, dropped to his knees, pressing his forehead to the earth, his voice raw. “It’s my fault… I deserve death.”

I drew a shuddering breath, forcing my mind to claw its way back from the brink of chaos. “This isn’t the time for blame,” I said, steadying myself. “Our priority is finding Makenna.”
