Chapter 1243
Chapter 1243:
The jagged edges bit into my palms, but I welcomed the pain—it was real, tangible, unlike the ghosts of failure that haunted my thoughts.
The last ambush had actually failed!
I had seen my arrow strike Makenna’s chest with my own eyes, seen the way her body recoiled from the impact. The memory of blood splattering all over the ground was still seared into my mind.
And yet… days had passed, and there was still no news of her demise.
“White wolf…” I spat the words like venom, gnashing my teeth hard.
That cursed self-healing ability… could it really mend even a heart-piercing wound?
And as if her survival wasn’t enough, Marehelm continued to defy me. The rebellion I had meticulously orchestrated had been snuffed out with appalling speed.
That damned city—fortified like a fortress, unyielding, stubborn as iron.
“But it doesn’t matter…” I murmured, a cruel smile stretching across my lips. I turned away from the window, the silk of my royal robe sweeping behind me like blood on water. “A cornered beast struggles the hardest before its end. Let their supplies dwindle… Let’s see how long they can hold on!”
Just then, the heavy doors of the hall groaned open, and a shadow slipped inside, cloaked in black.
“Who dares!” I snapped, my hand flying to the sword at my waist. “Guards!”
“Wait, Your Majesty,” came a smooth voice. The figure lowered his hood, revealing a face I did not recognize. “I am Mr. Harrison’s personal guard.”
At that name, heat surged to my temples. My fists clenched with sudden fury as I strode forward, the marble trembling beneath my boots. “Antoni still dares to send someone here? Now?”
The man did not flinch. His eyes were steady, infuriatingly composed.

I grabbed him by the collar, nearly shaking him off his feet. “Antoni promised to handle Makenna with me. Yet when it matters, he’s nowhere to be found! Where has he been hiding?”
The man bowed his head slightly, his tone maddeningly calm. “Mr. Harrison sustained injuries during the last attempt to capture Makenna. He is currently unable to present himself before you.”
I paused, surprise flickering across my expression before a twisted grin stretched my lips.
Antoni was hurt? Perfect. The wretched fool finally got what he deserved! But I quickly masked my satisfaction, straightening my stance. “Oh? How serious is it?”
“His left arm…” The guard hesitated, and for the first time, a flicker of emotion shadowed his eyes. “It was severed… by Makenna.”
“What!” I was utterly shocked.
Makenna—a woman who had once been nothing more than a delicate nuisance—had severed Antoni’s arm?
A chill crept along my spine before twisting into grim satisfaction.
Makenna… she truly was her parents’ daughter—ruthless and fiery. Giovanni and Josie would have been proud.
“Ha! So Antoni’s luck finally ran out!” I sneered, savoring the thought of his suffering. I was about to continue my tirade when the doors flew open with a thunderous bang.
“Y-Your Majesty!” A soldier stumbled in, his armor streaked with blood, eyes wide with fear. “Someone… someone broke into the royal palace’s secret chamber and stole an ancient manuscript!”
